Despite improvements in female education and rights in Lebanon, the labor market continues to reflect deep-rooted gender inequalities. Using data from the 2022 Labour Force Survey by CAS and the ILO, this essay explores gender disparities in labor force participation, unemployment, formality of employment, and access to social protections. The insights help inform inclusive labor policies and gender-equity interventions.
What Work Pays: Sectoral Employment Patterns and Income Inequality in Three Underserved Neighborhoods
In Lebanon’s vulnerable urban neighborhoods, being employed doesn’t necessarily mean earning enough to live. While employment rates reveal who is working, a more important question is: how much are they earning—and in which sectors? This dual-layer analysis, based on data from Hayy Terab (Tripoli), Hayy Taamir (Saida), and Hayy Tamlis (Beirut), examines both the distribution of workers across income brackets by sector and the relative earning power of each sector using a four-curve income ranking.
